Salone del Mobile: An Education
At this very moment, designers, manufacturers, artists, architects and design devotees alike are converging at the 54th edition of the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan, Italy to celebrate innovation and excellence in design – and some of DZINE’s own are among them! Also known as the Milan Furniture Fair, the Salone is not only the largest annual trade show of its kind in the world, but it is acknowledged as one of the most important for the home furnishings industry and the brands that debut their products there.
A small group from DZINE jetted off for seven espresso and Prosecco-fueled days to witness the latest in global design trends by revered design houses, as well as new, emerging talents. The fair runs this week from April 14-19 at the Milan Fairgrounds in the town of Rho on the outskirts of the city. Thousands of luxury home products, from beds and bookcases to sofas and shelving, are showcased over more than two million square feet of space by 2,000+ exhibitors.
The Salone del Mobile made its inaugural debut in 1961, beginning as a small event for furniture manufacturers to promote the exportation of Italian furniture. It has since grown to include manufacturers from all around the world promoting not just furniture, but high design of all types, including lighting, bathrooms, outdoor furnishings and accessories. While the fair caters to those within the furniture sector, it is also open to the general public for two days during its weeklong stretch.
DZINE has attended the Salone for the past 11 years and we are continually awed by how completely the Milanese embrace design week. It’s not just manufacturers and designers roaming the fair – you can find hoards of schoolchildren and a large number of young people, as well. Last year, over 39,000 members of the general public turned out for the event, a clear indication of how fully design is woven into the fabric of Italian culture.
